Activity 1: Responsibility Group Activity
Performance Objective: Embracing opportunities to contribute • BE HELPFUL: Understand & advance the group’s positive goals. • BE CONSCIENTIOUS: Be aware & careful of the choices you make. • BE ACCOUNTABLE: Accept that your actions impact everyone around you. • BE PERSEVERING: Work through difficulty & discouragement in pursuit of individual & team objectives. • BE RELIABLE: Prove that others can depend on you.
Materials:
-10 tennis balls or other things you can throw without worrying about injury
- Safe place to throw several balls at once.
Teacher Instructions:
Game Objective: The group will figure out how to juggle as many balls as possible.
1. Explain to the students that the balls Represents: Classes, Relationships, Job, Family, Friends, Coach, Role on the Team, etc… Everything that can feel like one big juggling act.
2. Have your group form a circle.
3. Introduce one ball to the group.
4. Instruct the group to throw the ball to anyone in the group except for the person next to them. Once they complete the exercise have them do it again but this time keep introducing ball after ball until the group begins dropping them.
5. They must throw to the same person each time.
6. Stop the group and have them brain storm how they can handle the added balls.
Facilitator Notes: • The goal is for the group to create a process for handling the additional balls. • Time it to see if they can find a process to do it faster.
7. Processing the Ideas: • Discuss the importance of responsibility: embracing opportunities to contribute. How did this group do in demonstrating responsibility to all members of the team as they tried to juggle the balls? • How does this relate to a team setting? (Reliable for what, recover quickly, stay positive, etc…) • How will RESPONSIBILITY look on your team? Identify
Activity 2: The Blame Game
Performance Objective: Adolescents often blame other people for their problems and assume that everyone is out to ruin their lives. Most have trouble accepting responsibility for their actions. They often believe that adults should be able to read their minds and have trouble asking for help. Blaming only leads to more conflicts. Statements including the words always and never, as well as statements like “Nobody understands” and “It is their entire fault,” are examples of blaming statements that prevent people from taking responsibility for their actions or seeking help when facing difficulty. In this activity, the girls will play The Blame Game and become aware of the amount of blaming they do.
MATERIALS:
-Small ball
-Basket or bowl
-Copy of The Blame Game Statements (cut into slips and placed in the basket or bowl)
(You may want two sets to make two smaller groups instead of one large group)
